Severe Storm Brings Down Trees Across Rutland; Key Travel Route Blocked
Emergency teams and highway clearance crews are responding across Rutland this Sunday morning as strong winds and severe storm weather continue to cause widespread disruption.
Fallen trees and debris have been reported across the county, leading to road blockages, dangerous driving conditions, and the cancellation of numerous outdoor events planned for today.
The most significant blockage reported this morning is on the A6003 between Uppingham and Preston, where a large tree has fallen directly across both lanes, completely blocking the route.
Advice for Drivers
Exercise extreme caution: High winds mean debris can suddenly blow into the road, and unrecorded fallen branches remain a hazard on rural routes.
Allow extra travel time: Expect diversions, slower traffic, and unexpected delays throughout the county.
Watch for surface hazards: Fallen leaves, standing water, and reduced visibility mean extra braking distance is essential.
Local Events Cancelled Today
Due to high winds and unsafe conditions, many outdoor events, sports fixtures, and community gatherings scheduled across Rutland today have been cancelled.
Event organisers and local authorities have advised the public to check official event social media pages or contact organisers directly before setting out, as indoor venues and outdoor parks evaluate site safety.
Safety Recommendations & Reporting Incident
Rutland County Council and local emergency services urge residents to stay safe and take precautions during the storm:
Avoid unnecessary travel while clearance operations are underway.
Stay clear of wooded areas, parks, and large trees where falling branches remain a risk.
Secure outdoor items, garden furniture, and refuse bins.
Need to report a blocked road or fallen tree?
Dangerous obstructions on public roads can be reported to local highways teams or Rutland County Council via their online service portal or non-emergency channels. In emergencies where there is an immediate threat to life, contact 999

Uppingham Road Improvements Completed Ahead of Schedule
Major resurfacing works along London Road in Uppingham have been successfully completed ahead of schedule as part of Rutland County Council’s ongoing investment in the county's highways network.
The scheme, which involved completely removing the old road surface, laying new surfacing, and reinstating clear road markings, was carried out overnight to minimise disruption to local residents and businesses. Initially planned to run over a two-week period from 28 September to 9 October, the team wrapped up operations a day earlier than scheduled. Additional road marking work is also being carried out elsewhere across the town and is nearing completion.
The London Road project represents one of several major highway improvement schemes delivered through Rutland County Council’s latest highways capital programme.
Speaking on the successful delivery, Councillor Oliver Hemsley, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:
"It's great to see this important resurfacing scheme completed ahead of schedule. It’s a massive improvement to one of Uppingham's key routes, benefitting residents, businesses and visitors to the town.
"We're now halfway through this year's highways capital programme, which has already delivered extensive improvements to roads and highway infrastructure across Rutland. By the end of 2026/27, we’ll have completed around eight kilometres of road resurfacing across the county. However, the capital programme is about much more than resurfacing. We're also investing in pothole repairs, footpath upgrades and verge maintenance, as well as major drainage schemes that will help to reduce the risk of flooding on our roads.”
Councillor Hemsley also noted that more work is planned for the county's road network, with further updates expected in the coming weeks and months.
Rutland County Council has made maintaining and upgrading the local road network a major priority, backed by an overall investment of £6.9 million in revenue and capital funding to ensure safer, more reliable journeys.
Plan Ahead for Roadworks: You can stay updated on future roadworks, closures, and temporary traffic control measures directly on the council's dedicated page: Rutland Roadworks & Closures Information.
Report Road Defects: In addition to planned maintenance, the council actively responds to emerging road defects. Residents can report potholes, damaged surface areas, or other maintenance issues using the FixMyStreet Rutland Portal or via the FixMyStreet mobile app.

Oakham Motorists Warned of Travel Delays Ahead of Upcoming Railway Crossing Closures
Drivers in Oakham are being urged to plan their journeys carefully as two upcoming road closures are set to impact local railway crossings this October. With closures affecting key routes on separate weekends, motorists should expect increased congestion and potential travel delays across the town.
Key Closure Details
Station Road / Infrastructure Works: On 4 October, a closure will take place from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM as Network Rail carries out essential infrastructure works.
Diversion: Traffic will be redirected to use the crossing on Cold Overton Road.
Brooke Road / Utility Works: A longer closure begins on 12 October at 8:00 AM and runs until 4:00 PM on 14 October. Severn Trent Water will be conducting road works next to the train crossing.
Diversion: The signed route will direct vehicles via the B640 (Oakham High Street) and Balmoral Road to navigate around the disruption.
What This Means for Local Traffic
Both closures will temporarily restrict traffic to relying on just a single functioning railway crossing within Oakham at any given time. Because these routes handle a significant volume of local traffic, the restrictions are expected to bottleneck vehicles, particularly during peak travel periods.
Residents and commuters are advised to allow extra time for their journeys, consider alternative routes if possible, or avoid the affected areas during the scheduled maintenance windows.

Essential Guide to Upcoming Overnight Resurfacing Works on London Road, Uppingham, Rutland
Motorists, residents, and local businesses in Uppingham are being advised of a forthcoming programme of overnight highway improvements. Rutland County Council has announced a major resurfacing project for London Road, scheduled to take place from 28 September to 9 October 2026.
The initiative is part of the council's ongoing efforts to upgrade local infrastructure following successful road improvements along the A47 and other key routes.
Key Details at a Glance
-
Dates: Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October 2026 (Weeknights only)
-
Times: 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM nightly
-
Location: London Road, Uppingham (stretching between Spring Back Way and North Street West)
-
Traffic Management: Full overnight road closure with a signposted diversion route. Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will remain open at all times.
-
Phased Schedule and Access Arrangements
To manage traffic disruption efficiently, the project will be split into two distinct working phases:
-
Phase 1 (28 September – 2 October): Covers London Road between Spring Back Way and High Street West. No vehicle access will be permitted from London Road to High Street West or High Street East during overnight closures.
-
Phase 2 (5–9 October): Covers London Road between High Street West and North Street West. Once Phase 1 concludes, overnight vehicle access to High Street West and East will reopen from the direction of Corby only.
-
The overall upgrade process involves removing the worn-out road surface, laying fresh materials, applying an anti-skid treatment, and repainting road markings.
Advice for Residents and Businesses
Because vehicles cannot enter, leave, or travel through the active construction zones during working hours, local residents needing their vehicles overnight are advised to park outside the closure area prior to 7:00 PM.
Rutland County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Oliver Hemsley, emphasised the necessity of the project:
“London Road is particularly important because it’s the main route through Uppingham, between Corby and the A47. Anyone who uses the route regularly can see the road surface needs replacing... By working overnight, we can complete the scheme as quickly as possible, while reducing the impact on daytime traffic and local businesses.”

Navigating Rutland Your Guide to Current Roadworks and Road Closures 17 September 2026
Staying ahead of traffic disruptions is essential for smooth travel across Rutland. The County Council actively monitors and coordinates local roadworks to prioritise public safety while minimising congestion. However, drivers and pedestrians should expect various planned maintenance projects, utility works, and emergency repairs across the region.
Key Disruptions and Maintenance Highlights
Planned schemes span multiple villages and towns, affecting both motorists and pedestrians:
Local Events & Footpaths, Oakham High Street and Market Placed will be closed on Sunday September 20th for Food Festival.
Pedestrians should also note that footpath E137 in Whissendine remains closed for bridge replacement work until November 3, 2026.
Traffic Signals, Temporary 2-way and multi-way signals are active at various locations including Uppingham, Clipsham, and Oakham to facilitate BT Openreach and Open Fibre utility updates.
Note on Emergencies: Unplanned road closures can happen without advanced notice, typically resulting from urgent utility interventions such as burst water mains, gas leaks, or power cuts. Diversion signs and access routes are implemented where feasible.
How to Check Live Updates
Because schedules can shift or face short-notice cancellations, motorists are encouraged to check real-time maps before traveling. Rutland County Council recommends using the Causeway one.network interactive online map for up-to-the-minute tracking of roadworks across the county. For optimal performance, access the platform via modern web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, or Edge.
