Safety
Public Fireworks Displays: What NOT to Take
When heading out to an organised public display, leave the following items at home to ensure safety and compliance with event rules:
Most public venues strictly prohibit bringing any pyrotechnics, including sparklers, onto the grounds.
Public events usually have licensed bars or designated refreshment areas and do not permit outside alcohol.
Large crowds, loud bangs, and flashing lights can severely distress animals. Leave pets safely at home.
Avoid loose-fitting nylon or synthetic garments that can easily catch a spark; opt for snug, warm layers and sturdy footwear.
At-Home Garden Fireworks Safety Notice
If you are planning a private display in your own garden, follow these essential safety guidelines:
Ensure your garden is large enough. Standard garden fireworks (Category 2) require a minimum safety distance of 8 metres, while larger ones require up to 25 metres.
Keep a bucket of water, a hose, or a fire extinguisher nearby. Always read instructions by torchlight in advance never use a naked flame.
Use a portfire or long-term lighter, stand well back, and never return to a firework once it has been lit, even if it fails to go off.
Mark out a clear viewing boundary for family and friends.
The Law on Fireworks in Streets and Public Spaces
It is illegal to throw or set off fireworks (including sparklers) in any highway, street, thoroughfare, or public space (such as parks, car parks, or public land).
This is strictly prohibited under Section 80 of the Explosives Act 1875.
Breaking this law can result in an on-the-spot fine of £90, or a fine of up to £5,000 and/or up to 3 months to 6 months imprisonment if prosecuted.
Keeping Pets Calm During Fireworks
Loud bangs can trigger severe anxiety in pets. Here is how you can help keep them safe and relaxed:
Set up a quiet, familiar hiding place in a room where your pet feels secure (like a corner with their bed, blankets, and favorite toys).
Close all curtains and blinds, and turn on the TV or radio to mask the sudden loud noises outside.
Try to remain calm and cheerful, as pets look to their owners for cues on how to react. Avoid making a heavy fuss over them when they tremble, as this can inadvertently reinforce their fear.
Ensure your pets are safely indoors well before dark, and check that microchip details are up to date in case they bolt from a sudden scare. If your pet has severe noise phobia, consult your vet ahead of time for specialised calming aids or medical options.
